The next trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” is set to premiere alongside the theater release of Marvel’s “The Avengers” on May 4. But fans can see it early by participating in a new online marketing campaign — one that involves tweeting pictures of Batman-based graffiti.

The latest viral campaign surrounding the film is presented as a Gotham City police investigation. Batman graffiti has been planted around the world for individuals to find. Fans can unlock still frames from the third trailer by submitting via Twitter or by email “photographic evidence of graffiti related to any movement in support of the vigilante’s return.”

“The Dark Knight Rises” takes place eight years after the “The Dark Knight.” Batman, played by Christian Bale, is on the run after taking the blame for Two Faces’ crimes.

The “leaked” police documents can be viewed on the film’s official website TheDarkKnightRises.com. For now, it’s hosting the official arrest warrant and wanted poster for the masked vigilante.

The film’s fictional deputy police commissioner Peter Foley states: “With Harvey Dent Day fast approaching, the Mayor is assuring the public that the Gotham City Police Department will redouble its efforts to apprehend Batman.”

There are seven pages of addresses online where Batman art can be found in major cities, including Rome, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, New York City and Melbourne.

Pictures must uploaded to Twitter with the hashtag #tdkr07202012 or emailed to tdkr07202012@gothampolicedepartment.com. The numbers correlate to this year’s summer release date. Participants must enable GPS-location services on their cameras.

“Report any and all information pertaining to the investigation to the designated contact (#tdkr07202012 or tdkr07202012@gothampolicedepartment.com),” the campaign states.

“Dark Knight” fans are now scouring their cities and turning in pictures of “The Dark Knight Rises” street graffiti. The submissions will unlock frames which can be viewed on TDKR07202012.com.

Blogs and super fans spread word about the interactive viral campaign on Monday.
